THE VOLUNTEERING PROJECT IN AFRICA - KENYA NAIROBI

The aim of the volunteer project in Africa – Kenya near Nairobi is to help the most vulnerable  community by sending volunteers in order to share solutions and perspectives.

Volunteers will decide whether to work in the education centre in Nairobi, or in the Southern Cross Academy, a school facility in a rural area, and finally in the Ripoi School within the Masai Mara area:

Teaching

Volunteers will be able to contribute within a school in Nairobi to help the teachers in their daily activities and to initiate new activities that help create new perspectives for the students.
Within the school, you will also help in the kitchen by preparing meals for the children and distributing food.

Female empowerment

Within the volunteer house, workshops are organised for young girls to provide them with skills that can be useful for looking for a job and creating a profession, but also to instil confidence and the ability to dream and achieve their dreams.

Depending on your skills you can design workshops in:

  • cooking
  • health and beauty
  • digital literacy
  • sessions on emotional intelligence and understanding emotions

Sport

Activities include group games, physical education classes, athletics competitions, volleyball and football matches… children love to play and learn new sports.

LOCATION

The project headquarters is located near Nairobi in the Kikuyu area. The centre of Nairobi is easily accessible and is about 30 minutes away by car.

ARRIVAL AND TRAINING

You will arrive at the Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta international airport. It is necessary to book a flight that lands in the morning, before 3 p.m. You will meet a driver appointed by the association at the airport who will drive you to Kikuyu. Once you reach the volunteer house, Marta, the project leader will provide you with the initial information regarding the projects, the activities and the safety rules to respect. Finally, you will meet volunteers from other countries of the world. Immediately you will feel welcomed and at ease!

BOARD AND LODGING

You will stay at the Volunteer House, just a few metres away from Marta’s house. Here you will find a comfortable environment with common areas. There are 6 bedrooms with 6 beds each, a common area, 3 bathrooms with showers and a kitchen.

For the Southern Cross Academy and Ripoi School projects accommodation is provided with a local family.

A TYPICAL DAY

Below is an outline of a typical day for a volunteer.

8:00 – 10:00 | wake-up and breakfast

10:00 – 10:45 | departure with the matatu to the St. Dorcas education centre

10:45 – 13:00 | activities at the St. Dorcas educational centre (support at school, recreational play activities, women’s empowerment)

13:30 – 18:30 | free time with the other volunteers

18:30 | dinner at the volunteers’ house

REQUIREMENTS TO PARTICIPATE

Be at least 18 years old and have a good knowledge of English.

MINIMUM LENGTH OF STAY

The minimum stay is 2 weeks. The volunteers can leave throughout the year and freely decide whether to stay at the project for a longer period.The advice of the YearOut staff is to stay at the project for a period of 4 weeks in order to make the volunteer intervention useful for the community as well as for themselves.

DONATION

The donation varies according to the number of weeks of stay and the chosen project.

Your donation includes: room and board, transfers to/from the airport, financing of materials needed for activities, 24-hour assistance, boiled water and drinking water every day.

FREE TIME

During the weekend or at the end of your volunteering experience, you can spend time exploring Kenya. We give you some ideas: Maasai Mara Safari, a nature reserve of extraordinary beauty, or you can go as far as Amboseli Park.
The partner can assist you by giving advice and you can also organise with other volunteers present.
