THE VOLUNTEER PROJECT IN AFRICA - UGANDA

The volunteer project in Uganda aims to improve the living conditions of children and adolescents through education, welcoming, improving infrastructures, listening to the poor and concrete interventions.

As a volunteer you will be able to take part in the activities of a Christian-Catholic confessional mission, in the rural area of Ntungamo which manages a reception center for girls in a state of vulnerability, an educational center for children and young people with moderate and severe physical and cognitive disabilities and a kindergarten dedicated to disadvantaged families.

As a volunteer you will be involved in the following areas of intervention:

Childcare

The reception center for girls and adolescents aims to welcome them in a serene environment, where they can be guided on a psychological and educational level at school.
The volunteer will be able to support the local staff in the afternoon entertainment activities.

Childcare

The kindergarten accommodates about 150 children from 2 to 6 years old from families
Destitute. In this facility, children can undertake their educational journey in a
Safe and welcoming environment. The volunteer will be able to carry out various recreational activities to support the staff.

Children with disabilities

The volunteer will be able to take care of children and young people with severe and moderate physical and mental disabilities. This center receives 40 children day and night and the presence of specialized staff is essential. The volunteer can contribute to the growth and learning of these children.
In addition, there is a physiotherapy service inside the center that operates both inside the structure and outside at the homes of families.

Construction and maintenance

If necessary, the volunteer will be able to devote himself to the improvement of the structures present within the various projects, through repainting activities and in general cleaning and arrangement of the premises.

LOCATION

The international volunteering project takes place in Uganda in a small village 150 km away from Kigali airport, where the volunteer will land. The village is located on the main artery that connects southern Uganda to the center of the countrand the capital Kampala. The territory is characterized by the presence of numerous lakes, rivers (the most important of which is the White Nile), equatorial forests and savannahs.

ARRIVAL AND TRAINING

You will arrive at Kigali International Airport, Rwandan airport, where a driver, appointed by the local partner, will transport you to the village. The duration of the taxi journey is around 4 hours.
Once you arrive on site, the coordinators will explain the various volunteer projects, the activities you are going to carry out and show you your accommodation.

BOARD AND LODGING

The volunteer will stay in the Guest House where several other volunteers participating in the activities are also accommodated. It is a house equipped with all comforts such as hot water, drinking water, showers, bed sheets, and towels. You will live in close contact with the missionaries so that you can closely observe and fully experience the life of a Franciscan Lay Missionary Community.

Below is the prospect of a typical day of a volunteer.

12:30 – 2:30 | Lunch break and free time

15:00 – 17:00 | Kindergarten, disabled centre, activities with girls

REQUIREMENTS TO PARTICIPATE

You have to be at least 21 years old.

MINIMUM LENGTH OF STAY

The minimum stay is 2 weeks. Volunteers can leave throughout the year and freely decide how much time to dedicate to the volunteering experience. YearOut strongly recommends leaving for a minimum of 4 weeks, to make the volunteers’ intervention effective for both the community and themselves.

DONATION

The donation varies according to the number of weeks of stay and the project chosen.

Your donation includes: 24-hour assistance, logistical support and materials for on-site activities, transfer to/from the airport.

FREE TIME

During your free time, you can explore new places and immerse yourself in a real adventure. You can arrange a safari at Queen Elizabeth Park, a protected area located in western Uganda.
The best equipped area of the park from a tourist point of view is the one around the visitor center, located on the Mweya Peninsula between Lake Edward and the Kazinga Canal.
