THE VOLUNTEER PROJECT IN ITALY - SICILY

The goal of the volunteer project in Sicily is to provide psychological support, health and legal support, and training opportunities to young migrants, women and
foreign families.

The projects are in inland Sicily, where the reception centres are located.

It is in these locations that the path of integration with the local community begins.

The reception services include a range of activities aimed at skills enhancement through education, training and job placement.

By participating in the volunteer project, you will work with the staff, which migrants are also part of, dealing with:

null

Community development

You will be involved in running literacy and education courses by offering your time for teaching Italian, mathematics and other interdisciplinary subjects. You will support staff during mediation activities, including offering your foreign language skills.

You will be able to activate workshops of manual, creative activities to be done with migrants and refugees for entertainment and to create an alternative form of expression to the Italian language that they very often do not speak (such as carpentry, painting, ceramics tailoring, etc.).

null

Female empowerment

The volunteer will contribute to the improvement of the condition of the women in a state of vulnerability, accommodated in the centre and their children, contributing to their well-being and their inclusion in community life and the work environment.
null

Sport

The volunteer will contribute by organising sports activities, encouraging team spirit, respect for rules and the physical and mental benefits that come with it.

Cricket and Soccer are the two most played sports within the communities and in dedicated spaces.

Childcare services

You will assist and play with kindergarten children and involve them in play activities during the afternoons. You will encourage the children to attend the after-school or summer centre, help them with their homework and organise Italian lessons.

LOCATION

The project takes place in Sicily, in two locations: in the Sicilian hinterland, in a small village in the province of Enna of 4000 inhabitants, and in Ragusa.

ARRIVAL AND TRAINING

You will arrive at Catania-Fontanarossa ‘Vincenzo Bellini’ airport.

BOARD AND LODGING

The accommodation, in the centre of the village, is organised in multiple rooms within the guesthouse.

Your donation includes: food, accommodation, 24-hour staff support, financing of materials needed for activities, initial training.

For more details about the donation see the page DONATION.

FREE TIME

The small town in the Sicilian hinterland is a very pleasant place to visit. Nearby, you can visit the Villa Romana del Casale in Piazza Armerina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, and the Greek theatre of Morgantina.

Ragusa, on the other hand, is an unspoilt place to discover both for its rich artistic heritage and its beautiful coastline and beaches.

VOLUNTEER QUOTES

“I left in February 2022 to set up the new project in Sicily. I found people in love with their work, extremely professional and welcoming, a wonderful land. The people welcomed can aspire to a better future. It is an honour to be part of this great project”.
